We begin your hygiene appointment with an informal chat. We ask about your oral hygiene routine at home, and if you have any concerns about your teeth, gums or mouth. We also ask if you are generally healthy and feeling well.
We use specialised equipment and techniques to deep clean your mouth, removing stubborn plaque from all areas, especially those that are hard to reach with a toothbrush at home. You shouldn’t find the treatment painful, although we are always guided by you, and can stop for a break if needed.
Once your teeth are beautifully clean, we give them a professional polish. This leaves your teeth looking and feeling smoother, brighter and healthier, and boosts your confidence in your smile.
We finish your hygiene appointment by giving you some personalised advice on how to look after your oral health at home between visits to the practice. This includes how to use interdental brushes properly, if necessary, and effective brushing techniques.
A healthy smile starts with healthy gums. Regular appointments with your dental hygienist is the best way to protect your oral health and prevent issues that could cause problems if left untreated. Hygienists are experts in removing plaque and bacteria from your teeth and gums, reducing the risk of gum disease.
The symptoms of gum disease can be mild and are often easily missed. We carry out a comprehensive gum check at every appointment, enabling us to treat early signs of disease to keep your mouth in the best possible condition and prevent more serious issues down the line.

If plaque builds up around the teeth and gum line, the gum tissues can become inflamed. The irritated gums often bleed while brushing, making them susceptible to the bacteria in the mouth. Swollen, red gums are often one of the first signs of the early stage of gum disease, known as gingivitis. Other symptoms include tooth sensitivity and bad breath. If left untreated, this gingivitis can progress to a more severe form of the condition, periodontitis. This isn’t reversible but is manageable with effective treatment.
The first stage of gum disease is known as gingivitis. If left untreated, gingivitis can lead to periodontitis, which can cause gums to separate from the teeth, creating pockets that can get infected. These pockets, over time, will deepen, the gums will continue to recede, and eventually, teeth can become loose and may have to be removed.
